LeBron James made his preseason debut for the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night, scoring 10 points in 18 minutes as his new team lost 114-108 to the Brooklyn Nets.

James was perfect from the free-throw line, making all eight of his attempts, and added five assists and four rebounds in a short, carefully managed outing. He sat out the entire second half, a common precaution in preseason games for veteran players.

The starting lineup gave home fans their first look at a group Philadelphia hopes can contend in the Eastern Conference. James began the game alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and rookie VJ Edgecombe, a combination that drew loud cheers during introductions.

Preseason results carry little weight, and coaches on both sides rotated heavily through their benches as the game went on. Brooklyn’s win was built largely after Philadelphia’s starters left the floor, and neither team treated the final score as a measure of where it stands.

For the 76ers, the night was really about health and familiarity. Embiid’s workload has been managed carefully in recent seasons, and the coaching staff has emphasised building chemistry early rather than chasing exhibition wins. James, now in the later years of a record-setting career, is expected to have his minutes watched throughout the regular season as well.

The bigger questions for Philadelphia remain familiar ones. Can the star group stay healthy through an 82-game schedule? Can the bench hold leads when the starters rest? And can a team assembled around big names develop the defensive consistency that decides playoff series in May and June?

Those answers will take months to arrive. For one night in October, though, the headline was simple enough: a new era in Philadelphia has officially begun, even if it lasted only 18 minutes.
