The San Diego International Film Festival will honour Mira Sorvino, Iliza Shlesinger and Viola Davis at its 25th anniversary Night of the Stars Tribute on 13 October at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. The ceremony anchors a milestone edition for one of California’s established film events.
Sorvino, an Academy Award winner for Mighty Aphrodite, will receive the Virtuoso Award, given to an actor whose recent work shows exceptional skill and range. Festival organisers pointed to a busy slate ahead for the actor, including a role opposite John Travolta and the long-awaited Romy and Michele sequel.
Shlesinger will take the Trailblazer Award, which recognises work that has opened doors and reshaped an art form. The comedian has released six stand-up specials, with a seventh arriving earlier this year, and her romantic dramedy Chasing Summer, which premiered at Sundance, will screen during the festival.
Davis is set to receive the Gregory Peck Award for Cinematic Excellence, joining a list of past honorees that includes Mark Hamill, Annette Bening and Geena Davis. The tribute has become the festival’s signature celebration of careers spanning film, television and stage.
Festival leadership said the three honorees represent the range of talent the event aims to celebrate, from dramatic performance to comedy and producing. The festival says it draws more than 3,200 submissions from 85 countries each year, and films premiered there have gone on to earn dozens of Oscar wins and nominations.
