Saugus makes a choice: No school choice

SAUGUS — The School Committee voted unanimously to prevent Saugus from becoming a school choice district at its latest meeting.

Committee Chair Vincent Serino said that the committee has to vote on becoming a school choice district, which would allow students from outside of town to attend Saugus Public Schools, around this time each year.

Superintendent Michael Hashem, speaking at the meeting, said that the committee traditionally votes against doing so each year.

“I think every year we struggle with the language on this,” committee member Ryan Fisher said at the meeting. “I’ll make a motion that Saugus remains a non-school choice district, and then we vote yes to approve.”

Fisher mentioned that he may have fumbled the language of the motion when he made it two years ago.

Speaking over the phone after the meeting, Fisher said that making Saugus a school choice district would have the effect of increasing class sizes and boosting enrollment.

“We want to focus on providing a quality education to Saugus students,” Fisher said.
